This is probably the best air cooler you can get for money!

I rebuilt my son's system from an AIO to this cooler because of issues the AIO had. I have the Threadripper version in my workstation and knew what I was getting into. A little anecdote: My son's PC case was starved for fresh air due to stupid design choices. I remedied this with a MashifyC from Fractal Design. When a software issue arose (bloatware from the Mainboard), we felt the glass was hot right about the cooler. Perplexed, I wondered how the chassis could heat up despite the great airflow design. I opened the chassis and it was cool inside. This is when I realized the CPU cooler is so good ( and large) that it even transferred heat to the glass 1/2 in away!

Pros: - Best air CPU cooler you can get - no LED shenanigans - Massive fin stacks and many heat pipes - low noise fans - pretty - highly precisely machined copper heat conductor - works well with liquid metal instead of thermal paste - a cool screwdriver is included

Cons: - If you never built a PC, you may want to look for a cooler that's easier to install. I build my own rigs since almost 3 decades - I did not mind, but your mileage may vary - Massive - you need a good quality Mainboard to not flex under the weight - no LED for those who look for those looks - and it will block some RAM slots from sight if you have that as LED - Some larger RAM modules will not work with this one - Some PC cases may be too slim to work with this one

Hints and recommendations: - Check clearances so that it fits into your chassis and does not interfere with high RAM. The RAM does not need to be low profile, but some really large RAM modules - especially with LED may interfere - and LED would get covered up - Do not transport your tower upright with the cooler hanging like this on the Mainboard's side - lay it down so the Mainboard is on the bottom instead - the frontal cooler is somewhat finicky to install when RAM interferes to some degree - and this will increase the overall height, thus chassis room needed. The Fractal Design MashifyC DOES work with RAM that requires a shifted front fan on this cooler. I had to do this and it works perfectly.

Last thoughts: Now, I knew all the Cons of this cooler going into this upgrade. I did choose cooler capacity over RGB loos my son would have chosen and I ordered RGB fans for his PC for the case to make up for it. I know from experience, this cooler will beat many others I've seen and I do understand why it is so hard to install: It's a trade-off for its size. The choice BeQuiet! had was to either use the space they have to work with to put more cooling it or to make it easier to install, but not both. They chose what is important and its primary purpose: Cooling!

Would I buy it again? Absolutely! Actually, I am currently running the stock Wraith on my secondary system and will probably replace it with another one of these ones. It looks beefy, is beefy, and has a beefy cooling capacity.

NOTE: I had never installed a new cooler before, so this is a review from someone who watches too much YouTube but doesn't have a lot of experience building PCs. Shoutout to LTT & JTC's videos!

SETUP: - Case: NZXT H500 - CPU: Ryzen 7 5800x - Cooler: Dark Rock 4 - Motherboard: Aorus B450 Elite - Case Fans: 2x (later upgraded to 4x) - GPU: RTX 3080

NEGATIVE(S): The only annoying thing is that the cooler ships only with one side of rubber rails to separate fan from cooler (to minimize vibration, increase tension in mount, etc.), meaning you basically can't (by default) put a fan on the other side (whether just for orientation, for pull / push-pull fan setups). HOWEVER, I reached out to Be Quiet support, and within a few hours they responded and already agreed to kindly ship extra rubber rails so I can mount a fan to the other side. Super responsive, professional, and fast customer service, easily the best I've had in a long while. In all, while annoying to discover this issue during installation, meh.

KEEP IN MIND: For people wanting to run 4x RAM slots with the air cooler & fan mounted in the standard way (push or push/pull air from front -> back), you will likely run into the issue I mention above, and I'd recommend my solution of mounting the fan the same but moving the fan to the back for a Pull configuration while asking Be Quiet for the extra set of rubber rails. However, if you're only running 2x RAM slots or you're orienting your fan vertically (push or pull air from bottom -> top), you should be totally fine (though again, depending on your motherboard).

POSITIVES: Other than the issue above, installation was straightforward, and I made sure to make some beautiful modern art with my Thermal Paste application. For people who haven't watched as much YouTube... thermal paste application style in general doesn't matter (thermals test very similar) as long as you don't use too much or too little, but the Dark Rock 4 provides a good amount in the box. All the parts were present, with an added bonus that they actually ship a GREAT free screwdriver in the box, which actually was better than my 2 screwdrivers I already had.

Performance is surprisingly top-tier for what seems like a mid-tier model. For others looking for an air cooler for the new Ryzens (without doing some intensive CPU OC), I don't think you even need to go for the Pro model (though I'm sure it wouldn't hurt). My 5800x runs incredibly cool and nowhere near the max temp (90C), with idling at ~35C and peak loads at ~65C or 70C occasionally. The fan is much quieter than my other fans so I don't think I can even notice it. I was afraid I'd need a bigger air cooler (think Dark Rock Pro 4 or larger Noctua), but clearly I was completely fine. Running stock (no OC), this has helped me get above-average benchmarks.

SUMMARY: In general, this air cooler is fantastic and customer support is great. Unless you're doing some crazy stuff (e.g. OCing on a 5950x), I'm pretty sure this cooler will be completely fine for your daily use. One issue did exist, but their great customer service handled that like pros and inspired me to write this review simply based on their performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Rock Pro 4 - i7-13700k

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 9, 2023

Long Format Review --- I recently rebuilt my PC with a new CPU, motherboard, RAM, and GPU to be up to date with the latest in high-end gaming hardware but on a budget.

New Spec --- Intel i7-13700k 16c/24l 5.2Ghz MSI MPG Z790 Carbon WiFi Corsair 32GB (2x16) DDR5 6000MHz Zotac 3080ti 12Gb

Reason For Buying --- The CPU I had was a LGA1151 socket and the new is LGA1700. My friend had previously upgraded from a LGA1151 CPU to a LGA1700 i5 CPU and used the exact same AIO water cooler I had been using in my old build - A Corsair H100i V2 dual rad claiming it fit perfectly with no issues. So I went ahead and didn't upgrade my cooler thinking it should work. Unfortunately, whilst the positioning of the plates all lined up, the CPU was less than 1mm from the coldplate when tightened down. This meant that whilst the CPU would be cooled a bit and the coolant would register as getting hot, it was very inefficient as to cool correctly you need a tight clamping force from CPU to coldplate. It would hit 100c 5 seconds after logging in doing nothing.

I went looking for an adequate cooler for my CPU and I remembered I used to run an AMD 8350 8 core build with a 'Be Quiet!' Shadow Rock 2 cooler and I loved it for two main reasons. It looked amazing, and it cooled amazing. Despite being a hot chip. So I went looking for Be Quiet!'s best in tower coolers and came across this and decided to make a purchase despite figuring a AIO would be a better option. However, this was an unexpected purchase as I didn't think I'd need to buy a new cooler so I didn't want to drop £150+ on a decent new Corsair cooler.

Experience --- In short, I love this cooler so far and I nearly forgot how much greater huge air coolers look as part of a beautiful gaming PC with RGB lighting. Be Quiet! has an outstanding design department and their relationship to their engineers is strong. The two included Silent Wings fans are in my experienced opinion the best fans on the market. They're not cheap compared to other options but they are ridiculously quiet and efficient; good looking too. I might perhaps spring for the RGB ones down the line. The rest of my fans are Corsair RGB LL fans.

Instructions --- Included in the box was an installation instruction printed in separate language booklets that fold out to make reading a bit easier as the paper isn't huge due to all the languages. The instructions are clear and simple, however some of the images could be a little clearer as some of them are a bit hard to see component orientation but nothing that stopped me assembling without issues. I am so greatful that Be Quiet! Includes a full sized, branded philips head screwdriver to install the two clamping screws as today not many brands will include tooling let alone a moulded long screwdriver w/ magnetic tip.

Cinebench - At the moment here in the UK (Sept 9th) we're experiencing the hottest September on record so testing this cooler with way higher than normal ambient temperatured isn't ideal, but I was still able to get some Cinebench scores with my setup. - Multi-core: 25356 - -+0v VID offset. Multi-core: 25981 - -0.1v VID offset. Single-core: 2028 - 0.1v VID offset.

In summary, I'm glad I ended up with this CPU cooler and I'm happy with my purchase. Installation was a breeze with no compatibility/interference issues nor issues with instructions. I'm certain I'll get better Cinebench results when the ambient goes back down to about the normal 12c-18c for Sept/Oct so I'll keep testing and update this review at later date including any updates with the cooler itself. I definitely recommend this cooler.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but installation needs improvements

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 23, 2023

Recently upgraded to a 5800X3D and was in need of a cooler. At first I went with an AIO which while it worked and was easy to install the pump soon developed a very annoying and constant whine. I also constantly felt paranoid that the AIO might develop a leak and ruin the components. Because of that I switched to the BK022 since it is quite beefy and I've had good experience with beQuiet coolers and fans in the past.

At idle with the BK022 installed the CPU sits at about 35C and when running a benchmark that pushes the CPU to the absolute limit it tops out at around 83C, so all in all I would say the cooler performs quite well. In both cases the noise levels from the fans are much, much lower than the ones of the AIO I previously used.

The only downside this cooler has is the installation itself. Unless you have quite a big PC case the installation should be carried out with the motherboard removed from the case, however attaching the mount and the cooler itself is not the big issue. The problem is largely with the installation of the center fan. Because the two center screws need to be screwed while the cooler is already mounter that means the fan needs to be inserted last. This makes it very fiddly as you have to center it properly and then attach it with the clips by slotting them into the cooler's fins which are very sharp and will leave you with a few cuts on your fingers. I understand why the installation steps are how they are but I feel there is room for improvement when it comes to the clips.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review for the be quiet! BK022 Dark Rock Pro 4 CPU Air Cooler

Reviewed in Singapore on October 13, 2023

When seeking a CPU cooling solution, the balance between performance and aesthetics is paramount. Be quiet! BK022 Dark Rock Pro 4 encapsulates this balance perfectly.

Right from the unboxing, the cooler radiates a premium aura. Its sleek black design offers aesthetic charm to any build and boasts superior cooling performance. Equipped with a 250W TDP, 6-pole fan motor, and six heat pipes, it's evident that this cooler is engineered to manage intense thermal demands.

Integrating this with the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, a behemoth boasting 16 cores and 32 threads, was transformative. My initial setup with a standard cooler faced troubling issues: frequent blue screens in Windows and CPU temperatures touching an unsettling 90°C. Such conditions threaten both CPU performance and longevity.

However, with the Dark Rock Pro 4 in place, these concerns were alleviated. The cooler operates with a whisper-quiet demeanour, upholding the "be quiet!" reputation. More notably, even under the exhaustive load from the 5950X's cores, temperatures remained at a cool 70°C. Given the Ryzen 9's capabilities, this performance is nothing short of outstanding.

The installation process of the cooler was user-friendly. The included manual was lucid, and the mounting apparatus aligned perfectly, ensuring a smooth setup. However, an essential point to note is the cooler's size. Before making a purchase, always ensure it fits comfortably within your casing. Its formidable cooling performance comes with a sizable footprint, and compatibility checks with your case are imperative.

In conclusion, the be quiet! BK022 Dark Rock Pro 4 CPU Air Cooler is a must-have for enthusiasts aiming to harness the power of high-tier CPUs like the Ryzen 9 5950X. It promises optimal thermal performance, ensuring your CPU operates efficiently and is shielded from overheating risks. This cooler is a premier choice for those emphasizing performance, silence, and peace of mind.
