  Edward Zwick's Courage Under Fire is an underrated & solid Rashomon-style military procedural, also this is Hollywood's first film about the Gulf War. The movie touches on some significant humanistic aspect and tackles such themes as grief, PTSD and the aftermath of trauma, tho it's bit predictable and they could’ve avoided that Hollywood-ish happy ending. The cast is stacked (Matt Damon, in his first major role) and it's always amazing how Denzel Washington elevates the quality of any movie he's in.

  I feel like the idealism that's being honored here doesn't date even if we're conditioned to be suspicious of it these days, and if I'm wrong about that, well, what a vehicle for some exquisite, string-pulling melodrama. Anyway this is a terrific showcase for two really tremendous and tremendously showy movie-star performances.

  Like other films starring Denzel Washington, it works due to his presence. He portrays a military man perfectly. Stern, polite but stil fierce. As far as the narrative goes, it's the usual investigation in the military, where things are being hidden to honor an unspoken code of honour or to protect the perpetrator. No t as compelling as I would hope to, but still Denzel always makes a film worthwhile. In a hour or less, I'll drive 220km, my home for 2021 awaits me. It's only a year, still it's a major change. I'm not sure when I'll have wi-fi so it's possible that my next reviews will be a little short. And I just want to thank the people I met on letterboxd. I know I only know you virtually, but it's so great to speak to people who also love cinema, to hear opinions on films, and to discover films I would never even imagine they exist.

One of the first modern war movies to really get "it" right, Courage Under Fire is a moving and tragic character-driven Rashomon-inspired drama with outstanding performances all around, but espesh from Denzel, a convincing Meg Ryan, a terrifying Lou Diamond Phillips, and Matt Damon in a break-out role that put him on the map as a rising young talent in Hollywood, and though it might be too sentimental or jingoistic for some people's tastes, I'm here to say its pathos and deft characterization is authentic, respectful, and heartbreaking.
